Knife Care
Take Care of Your Blade
High-carbon steel takes and holds a wicked edge, but it comes with one trade-off: it needs to be cared for. Unlike stainless steel, carbon steel will rust if it's left wet or neglected.
Keep It Clean. Keep It Dry.
Use it. Wash it. Dry it. After using your knife, wash it by hand with warm water and a little dish soap. Dry the blade completely before putting it away. Don't leave it sitting in the sink, soaking in water, or covered in food. Never put your knife in the dishwasher. The heat, moisture, and harsh detergents WILL damage the blade and handle. For longer-term storage, a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil, or the wax provided with the knife will help protect the steel from moisture.
Don't Fight the Patina
Your knife is going to change. That's part of owning carbon steel. As you use the blade, it will naturally develop a patina — a layer of oxidation that can range from grey and blue to darker shades depending on how the knife is used. Foods with acidity, such as tomatoes, citrus, onions, and other fruits and vegetables, will usually speed up the process.
Don't mistake patina for rust.
A stable patina is a natural protective layer on the steel and can actually help improve its resistance to further corrosion. Over time, your knife will develop its own character based on what you cut, how often you use it, and how you care for it. The marks, scratches, and changing colors aren't flaws. They're proof that the knife is being used!
Respect the Steel
A few simple habits will keep your blade ready for work:
-
Hand wash only.
-
Dry it immediately.
-
Never leave it soaking in water.
-
Don't store it while it's wet or damp.
-
Use a proper wood or plastic cutting board.
-
Keep it away from glass, stone, and other hard cutting surfaces.
-
Apply food-safe mineral oil when storing it for extended periods.
-
Let the patina develop — it's part of the blade's character.
Treat your knife right and it will reward you for years. Use it hard. Keep it dry. Keep it sharp.
Warranty and Sharpening
Bremner Built knives come with a lifetime warranty against any natural defects or issues. I will also offer free sharpening for life, although shipping will be at the cost of the owner if needed. Neglectful care of the knife is not covered which includes using the knife as a pry bar or a hammer or putting the knife through the dishwasher. If used and taken care of properly this knife will last for generations. That being said, It is not made of magic steel so it will need to be sharpened after a certain amount of use. Please avoid the use of pull through sharpening systems as these knives are sharpened to a specific angle. I would recommend using a ceramic or diamond sharpening rod. I would also recommend using a leather strop for "refreshing" the edge. Any other questions about warranty or sharpening please don't hesitate to get ahold of me. Thanks
